About Jim Joel

Jim Joel (1895–1992), scion of a pioneering entrepreneurial family with deep roots in South Africa since the late 19th century, visited the country frequently throughout his long life. In 1940, he inherited Childwickbury in Hertfordshire from his father and successfully bred racehorses—including winners of the Derby and Grand National—demonstrating his commitment to excellence beyond business.

Since his death, The Childwick Trust has distributed over £90m in grants to a wide range of causes in both the United Kingdom and South Africa. In South Africa, the Childwick Trust’s philanthropic objectives are carried out of the Jim Joel Fund, with a dedicated focus on Early Childhood Development (ECD).

The main goal of the Jim Joel Fund is to address structural and equality by investing in young children during their critical formative years.  Working closely with expert advisors, led on the ground by Giuliana Bland, the Jim Joel Fund channels resources into high impact, sustainable ECD interventions.
